25th-Dec-2005 08:54 am - A lovely plea for seasonal sanity
Are you upset that someone said "Merry Christmas" and you don't celebrate that holiday?...

Are your knickers tied up into a knot because they said "Happy Hanukkah" and you don't celebrate that either?...

Angry at "Happy Kwanzaa"? Contemptuous at "Blessed Yule"? P.O.ed at "Joyous Solstice"?...

Do the words "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greeting" make the splitter (splitter versus lumper) in you go ballistic because it's too generic and you want specificity?...

Late 2005 will be remembered as the time that the culture wars got silly. People getting angry over other people good wishes! Certainly this falls under the heading of "no good deed goes unpunished".

Frankly I don't celebrate any of these holidays any more: I haven't the resources to celebrate in a typical American consumerist manner. And I don't celebrate the religious undertones of them either (for those of you saying, "but pagans celebrate Yule/Winter Solstice" ... I've gone and declared myself a "Celtic Reconstructionist" and they tend to recognize four holy days and none of them are in December. And yes, the broomstick has gone too far up my ass.)

So, before you get mad at anyone for wishing you a good day (heaven forbid), consider this:

Perhaps, whatever that person is saying, you could ignore the actual words and get to the heart of what's being said:

And I would sum that up as "Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards All"

Yep, I know that is from the New Testament (Luke 2:14), but Peace on Earth is not just the hope of Christians. It is a hope of all people of good will. And sometimes good will is transformed into good actions, the kinds of good actions that help people in tangible ways, leading bit by tiny bit toward a better world.

So, instead of getting frustrated that someone's greeting was too politically correct or too politically incorrect or not sensitive enough to the nuances associated with the words found in a tiny dark corner of your mind, just think:

"Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards All"

Peace.
Good Will.
There's nothing wrong with that and we all need it.
Enjoy the day.
